Frank’s ground kiss was not in vain PDF Print E-mail

The Indian Minister for Agriculture, Sharad Pawar, has promised that the Indian Government will look into the botched job of upgrading our sugar mills. It would be nice to believe that this will result in compensation from the Indian Government but the tens of millions of dollars involved means it’s unlikely that India will admit that their contractors were shonky, They’re more likely to say that FSC signed off on all their work and the problems must have occurred after that. However, the agreement by the Minister for Agriculture that they’ll look at it, is no doubt the result of a lot of begging by Frank on his World Begging Bowl tour.

Typhoid was once very rare in Fiji, now it’s an everyday occurrence, which poses a serious threat to our tourism industry. On Saturday the regime’s propaganda machine at the Sun was pumping out a message of “Don’t mess with me” to the Japanese following Frank’s exclusion from the Japanese Pacific leaders conference. By Sunday, the Sun was singing a new tune. The Ministry of Misinformation pulled back its first press release and replaced with a new friendly release. People in the west of the country remember that Bainimarama promised to replace European Union money for sugar with money of his own, but precious little of this has materialised. So they’ll be outraged if Bainimarama throws away Japanese assistance as the price of a temper tantrum.

Cane price increase is meaningless PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 21 May 2012 12:29

FSC has forecast an increase of a dollar thirty five cents per tonne of cane over the price paid in 2011. This is a very modest increase and reflects an expected increase in the price paid by the EU for sugar, not an improvement in operation of FSC. What farmers need to hear is a guarantee that FSC will only need 10 tonnes of cane and not 13 tonnes to produce a tonne of sugar. Unless they can do this our industry is doomed.

How much are banks going to be forced to lend? PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 21 May 2012 12:27

Bank of the South Pacific has revealed that it will be forced to lend $48 million to renewable energy projects and the energy sector this year. This is under the regime’s policy of compulsory loans of 6 percent of deposits to agriculture and renewable energy. The same rule applies to Westpac, ANZ and Bank of Baroda, so the question is how much is going to be forced out of the banks to projects in these sectors? And how many of the projects that receive these funds will be projects belonging to friends of the regime such as Abdul Khan and his co-generation projects?
